How to Make Granny Squares: A Beginner's Guide

Granny squares are a classic crochet project that can be made in a variety of sizes and colors. They are perfect for using up leftover yarn and can be joined together to make a blanket, scarf, or even clothing. If you're new to crochet, then granny squares are a great project to start with. In this guide, we'll show you how to make a basic granny square step-by-step.

Materials:

  • Yarn in different colors
  • Crochet hook (appropriate for the yarn)
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Step 1: Make a Slip Knot To begin, make a slip knot with one of your yarns. Place the loop on your crochet hook, and pull the yarn end to tighten.

Step 2: Chain 4 Next, make a chain of four stitches. To make a chain stitch, yarn over your hook and pull it through the loop on your hook.

Step 3: Join the Chain Join the chain into a ring by inserting your hook into the first chain you made and slip stitching it closed. To slip stitch, insert your hook into the first chain, yarn over and pull it through both loops on your hook.

Step 4: Make the First Round Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet), then make two more double crochets into the center of the ring. To make a double crochet, yarn over your hook, insert it into the ring, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, then yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.

Chain two, then make three double crochets into the center of the ring. Chain two again, then make three more double crochets into the center of the ring. You should now have four clusters of three double crochets, separated by chain spaces.

Step 5: Make the Second Round To continue, chain three, then make two double crochets into the chain two space of the previous round. Chain two, then make three double crochets into the next chain two space. Chain two again, then make three more double crochets into the next chain two space. Chain two, then make three more double crochets into the next chain two space.

Step 6: Continue to Repeat Continue to repeat step 5 until your granny square is the desired size. Each round will have four clusters of three double crochets, separated by chain two spaces.

Step 7: Finish Off When your granny square is the desired size, finish off by cutting the yarn and pulling it through the loop on your hook. Use a tapestry needle to weave in the ends of the yarn.

Congratulations! You have now made a basic granny square. You can make as many squares as you like, in different colors and sizes, and join them together to make a larger project. With a little practice, you'll be making beautiful granny squares in no time.
